Chapter Eighteen

Tall Terry put down the corkscrew, stopping only momentarily to wipe off the blood on a stained rag. Rage was scrawled across his face like graffiti on a wall, his foray into torture not getting the reaction he wanted. It wasn’t just about inflicting pain, though that was a benefit, it was about sending a message. The man before him was the leader of his most recent captures and by crushing his spirit he could get the rest of them to fall in line. That the man tied to the chair behind him had stoically refused to crumble was annoying beyond measure.

“You know, this is all rather impressive, but it isn’t helping anyone. You should just submit to Tall Terry and then this would all be over. No more pain, no more agony, just your boys working for me whilst you recuperate in comfort. Tall Terry isn’t an unreasonable man, just ask anyone here.” Terry looked at the selection of tools before him. He had been working his way across his collection but was rapidly running out of choices. The knife had done nothing, neither had the steel knitting needle he liked to wiggle about in the first tool’s openings. The pliers had claimed a few nails and even a tooth, but they had elicited barely a grunt from his prisoner. The corkscrew was a particular favourite of Terry’s, he liked to press it into the palm of his prey and twist, but even that hadn’t done much.

“I think,” Nelson said, his breathing heavy and ragged. He had done everything he could to stifle his cries, to push down his pain and ignore it. He knew it was a losing battle, but the annoyance on his captor’s face was clear to see and it was giving Nelson strength. “I think you should pick one of the many hells and get lost there. You think I’m telling my boys to help you then you’re insane. We don’t bow to the likes of you.”

“Oh, I think you will. Everyone has a limit, see. Even Tall Terry. You know before all of this,” Terry gestured at the world around him, “I was a fishmonger. Can you believe that? Tall Terry used to worry about the deliveries from Seahaven getting here on time. They weren’t cheap, the wagons they use had runic enchantments on them to keep them cold, and they liked to charge a premium because of that. There was this one wagon owner, real smug guy, used to laugh as Tall Terry handed over his hard-earned coin. When all of this started it seemed like a real good opportunity to wipe that smile off his face.”

“What’s your point?”

“My point is he works for me now. Or well did anyway. He begged for his life, begged for Tall Terry not to gut him like one of the fish he brought. So, magnanimous as always, Tall Terry let him keep his life, provided he work for me. My very own first minion him, the start of the little family we have here.
